Serendipity's Charm

Essays on Intellectual Freedom

When the Librarian of Congress and the Register of Copyrights were fired within days of each other in May 2025, Anita S. Coleman went looking for what it meant — and found the answer a mile from her house.

Part I takes on the national fight: self-censorship, the Freedom to Read Act, Huntington Beach, and the $1.5 billion Bartz v. Anthropic settlement. Part II follows the questions home to Irvine, California, in field notes from a city building its own public library system. Part personal essay, part civic chronicle.

“When our very ability to think independently is under challenge, Coleman is one of our most exciting advocates. Her prophetic voice needs to be heard.”

— William Badke, Associate Librarian, Trinity Western University
